TL;DR: The 2027 Social Security raise adds about $75 a month. A $1,970.30 mortgage payment that ends before you retire frees more than 26 times that, every month, and at a 4 percent withdrawal rate it lowers the savings you need by $591,090. Taxes, insurance, and upkeep remain. One large bill does not.
On October 14, 2026, the Social Security Administration announced a [3.6 percent cost-of-living adjustment][5] for 2027. Retirement benefits rise by about $75 a month on average.
That is a welcome raise. It is also not the largest number a future retiree can change.
Most retirement coverage asks how much income you will have. It rarely asks how much income you will need. A mortgage that ends before your paycheck does lowers that second number, and it stays lower. Call it the smaller target.
What one payment is worth in retirement
Take an illustrative loan: $320,000 at 6.25 percent over 30 years.
- Monthly payment: $1,970.30
- Per year: $23,643.60
That one payment is more than 26 times the average 2027 Social Security raise.
Under the [4 percent rule][6], a common planning shortcut, each dollar of yearly spending needs $25 saved. Removing $23,643.60 a year lowers the target by $591,090.
Ending it before the paycheck ends
Now add extra payments of $500, ten times a year, whenever the budget allows.
| Schedule | Payoff | Interest |
|---|---|---|
| Payments as scheduled | 30 years | $389,302.77 |
| Plus $500, ten times a year | 19 years 3 months | $230,042.98 |
The loan ends 10 years and 9 months sooner, and $159,259.79 of interest is never charged.
Point to note: a paid-off house is not a free house. Property taxes, insurance, and maintenance stay. If five bills arrive every month and one ends, you still have four. You also have more of your income to decide about.
Both, not one or the other
The usual advice treats this as a choice between the mortgage and retirement saving. I did not pick one. My 401(k) has not paused for our payoff, and the Roth is maxed every year.
The math is simple. Staying with it for nineteen years is not, because a single extra payment barely moves a statement.
Where PayOff Pro comes in
PayOff Pro does not move your money or connect to your bank. You pay your servicer. The app records each payment and shows what it changed.
- Your true interest cost first. See what the schedule costs before you log anything.
- Every extra payment recorded. See the interest erased and the time removed.
No account, no bank login, and no analytics. Your mortgage stays on your iPhone.
Three things to do this month
- Find your yearly payment. Multiply your principal and interest by 12. That is the bill your retirement will not have to cover.
- Keep retirement contributions running while you send extra principal.
- Decide what the freed payment is for, whether maintenance, children, or retirement, before the last payment.
The bottom line
You cannot control next year's cost-of-living adjustment. You can control how many bills follow you into retirement.

Disclaimer: All figures illustrate a hypothetical $320,000 loan at 6.25 percent on a 30-year term, with no taxes, insurance, or fees included. The accelerated row assumes extra payments of $500, ten times a year, until payoff, 192 payments totalling $96,000. The retirement figures use the 4 percent rule as a planning shortcut and ignore taxes on withdrawals, inflation in other costs, and investment returns; your own retirement need will differ. The Social Security figure is the national average reported by the Social Security Administration, not any individual benefit. Your terms will differ, so verify every number against your own statement before acting. These figures are illustrations, not a promise or guarantee of any saving or payoff date. Prepayment rules and how a servicer applies extra funds vary by lender and loan type, so confirm your extra payments reach principal.
